Cruzeiro hand Estudiantes record loss

Brazilian giants Cruzeiro crushed Argentinian champions Estudiantes 5-0 in their Copa Libertadores clash on Wednesday night.

Walter Montillo and Wallyson scored twice each to send Cruzeiro top of Group Seven and hand Estudiantes their heaviest ever defeat in the competition.

Cruzeiro went ahead after just 50 seconds through Wallyson before Roger and Montillo struck before break to put the Brazilians in total control.

Montillo netted his second as he capitalised on a mistake by Orion just before the hour mark and Wallyson completed the rout by finishing off a fine move involving Thiago Ribeiro with eight minutes to go.

Coach Cuca praised his side's display as they sorted out the problems they had been having in the local Minas Gerais state championship in style.

"After we watched some videos of Estudiantes we understood the way they played and understood changes were necessary,'' he said. "It is always risky. We tried to spring a surprise with strong midfielders and fast full-backs.''

Reigning Copa Libertadores champions Internacional had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Emelec of Ecuador in the first game in Group Six. Argentina midfielder Mario Bolatti headed Inter into a 79th-minute lead on his debut, but they were pegged back in the fourth minute of stoppage time when Fernando Gimenez headed in a Leandro Torres free-kick.

Also in Group Six, second-half goals from Miguel Angel Martinez and Ricardo Esqueda gave Mexican side Jaguares a 2-0 win over Wilstermann of Bolivia.

Elsewhere, Hebert Arriola netted twice and German Alemanno once as Peruvian champions Universidad San Martin won 3-0 away at Colombian champions Once Caldas in Group One.

Arriola said: "We played great football. We did well both in defence and in attack. It was a deserved win.''

In Chile, Union Espanola and Universidad Catolica drew 2-2 in Group Four. Espanola equalised in injury time thanks to Braulio Leal's penalty. They had taken the lead through Leonardo Monje three minutes after the restart, but Lucas Pratto levelled in the 66th minute and Fernando Meneses put Catolica in front five minutes later.
