'Veteran Carragher' not ready to retire

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has insisted he has been spurred on to prolong his Anfield playing days by the reality that he is heading in to the 'veteran' stage of his career.

• Carroll set for debut against United
• Hodgson 'wounded' by Reds spell
• Liverpool blog: The run is halted

Carragher, 33, has battled back from a shoulder injury to prove his body can still stand up to the rigours of Premier League football and he has returned to a Reds side enjoying a much better run of form than the one he left under Roy Hodgson at the end of November.

The defender produced a starring display on his return to the starting line-up, shackling former team-mate Fernando Torres in the win over Chelsea, though waking up to 'veteran Carragher' headlines the next morning brought home the reality that his playing career is deep into its autumn.

But despite knowing that his very best days are proably behind him, the former England international still feels he has plenty to offer.

"I want to play for Liverpool as long as I can," Carragher said. "I picked up some of the papers after the Chelsea game and each one said 'veteran Carragher'.

"It made me think 'God I've not got too long left I know that at a minimum I have two and a half years left, and that time will fly."
