Carroll tipped for debut against United

Andrew Carroll is on course to make his debut for Liverpool against Manchester United at the start of next month.

Carroll, the most expensive British player of all time following his £35 million move from Newcastle United, has yet to make his debut for Liverpooldue to a thigh injury. He has not played in 2011 after picking up the problem over the Christmas period.

Newspaper reports a week ago suggested he would not play again this season, something that interim manager Kenny Dalglish quickly denied, and now Carroll has returned to light training and will build up his fitness with a target of facing United at Anfield on March 6.

However, it will be over two months since Carroll played first-team football, so it is unlikely he would be immediately paired with fellow January signing Luis Suarez in the starting line-up.

Jamie Carragher is looking forward to seeing the pair up front together. He told talkSPORT: "I am really excited about seeing them together. I was delighted we got them in and the club made a statement. Someone the size of Carroll and then Suarez running about him, it looks good."

Carragher is now confident that the end is in sight for the club's recent troubles.

"The last 18 months has been really tough coming home when we have not been doing too well," he said.

"Me and Stevie [Gerrard] are so emotionally involved that it is not a good thing - you probably get too involved and it affects your whole life. It has taken its toll on everyone. It is just great now that it is sorted and that pressure has lessened, now we look as if we are having a few results.

"People have started talking about the top four, but I'm just happy we're winning games. I'm not worrying about the league table."
