Favre takes Monchengladbach job

Former Hertha Berlin coach Lucien Favre has been appointed as the new coach of Borussia Monchengladbach, the Bundesliga strugglers confirmed on Monday.

He replaces Michael Frontzeck, who was sacked on Sunday after two defeats left the club seven points adrift of safety at the bottom of the table.

The 53-year-old is on his way to North-Rhine Westphalia, where he will be officially unveiled to begin work preparing for next weekend's home fixture with Schalke.

After winning two league titles in Switzerland with FC Zurich, Favre joined Hertha in 2007 and led them to 10th in his first season.

He took them to fourth in his second season in charge, only narrowly missing out on a place in the Champions League while keeping them in the hunt for the league title until just a fortnight before the season's conclusion.

As a result, he was named Germany's coach of the year that season, but, the sale of key players that summer weakened his side and they slumped the following season with Favre losing his job after winning only one of the first seven games.

He has been out of work since then, although his name has been linked with practically every Bundesliga vacancy over the past 18 months.
