Martins to fall head over heels again

Obafemi Martins has promised to replicate the somersaults that became his goal celebration trademark at Newcastle - if and when he starts scoring for Birmingham.

Martins, signed on loan from Rubin Kazan for the remainder of the campaign, admits it was too cold in Russia to celebrate in such an extravagant manner. But the Nigeria international will bring the somersaults back during his spell with Blues.

Martins impressed on his debut against Stoke at the weekend in partnership with Nikola Zigic although he had few goalscoring chances.

He said: "I'm still going to do the somersaults. In fact, I think I will do them more. If I score goals, I'll do it. Nani did a somersault on Saturday when he scored for Manchester United but mine is different to that.

"I had to be careful about doing that in Russia. The weather was too cold! If I score in the Carling Cup final. I think I'll try and do ten somersaults, maybe more than that!''

Martins also says he may consider joining Birmingham on a permanent deal at the end of the season.

"Would I like a permanent move? Yes, why not. Birmingham is a big club and the team is doing well," he said. "If everything goes well then, of course, I'm going to stay.

"I was keen to play Premier League football again. It is one of the best leagues in the world. It doesn't matter to me that Birmingham aren't the biggest team in this division. They're not the smallest team either. I wanted to come here and play for them. This is a great opportunity."

Martins, who will face his former club Newcastle on Tuesday evening at St Andrew's, is glad to be back in the Premier League and reunited with his family.

He said: "I feel at home again. I have my house here, my girlfriend and my kid here, so I'm happy to be back. I missed them when I was in Russia but it was difficult for them to come over there.

"It is four hours away and my girlfriend didn't really like to fly and stay in Russia. I used to speak to them on the phone but I didn't see them for about five months so it was not good. I'm glad to be back.''

Martins was happy to finally make his debut against Stoke after a wait to obtain his visa.

He said: "''I thought it would be a day or two. When I was at Inter Milan, I got it in a day but everything has changed now. The British Embassy, they change everything, they have changed the system.

"It was not a worry because they said they were going to give it me. It was just a delay. It took a few days but I'm glad to be here now and I want to score goals for Birmingham and help them climb the table.''
