Whelan wants Liverpool scalp

Dave Whelan wants his team to burst the Kenny Dalglish bubble when his Wigan team play at Anfield on Saturday, and he has described Dalglish as the club's "saviour" on his second coming.

Whelan says that the new Liverpool owners, headed by John Henry, should immediately appoint Dalglish as the long-term successor to Roy Hodgson from his position of caretaker until the end of the season.

The Wigan chairman told ESPNsoccernet: "Liverpool are flying at present so I imagine no one will give us any chance at all when we go to Anfield, but you never know with this team, and perhaps we can burst Kenny's bubble, it would be lovely to do that.

"Football is full of shocks - look what happened to Manchester United when they went to Wolves. For me Kenny Dalglish has been the saviour of Liverpool football club, he always has been and I always felt that he would be when he came back as manager.

"I wish him well. Not, of course, when we play them, but Dalglish is a genius the way he has instantly turned around Liverpool's fortunes."

Wigan are fighting a desperate battle for survival, as Whelan confessed: "We have had a six-year run in the Premier League, and that is just a fantastic achievement for a club like Wigan, it has been a fantastic run.

"But it gets harder and harder to stay there with the competition becoming stronger and stronger, so it would be like walking on water if we managed it again this season."
