Kranjcar stayed for family reasons

Niko Kranjcar has revealed he chose to remain at Tottenham in January due to his wife's pregnancy and suggested he could still seek a move away from the club.

Pavlyuchenko: I want to leave

Kranjcar had been expected to leave Spurs last month having expressed his frustration at a lack of first-team opportunities this season, and the arrival of Steven Pienaar suggested he may have fallen further down the pecking order.

He had looked set for a move to Germany when Werder Bremen tabled a bid, but he says he rejected the offer due to family reasons.

"My wife is one month away from giving birth to our first child and I wanted to stay with her," he said. "She will be having the baby here in England.

"For now, I decided to stay here for family reasons and the right offer didn't come for me anyway."

Kranjcar scored a stunning injury-time winner against Bolton on Saturday but, although he hailed it as "a great moment", he feels it will do little to boost his chances of regular first-team football.

"It's been the hardest season for me," he said. "I went away for internationals and scored five goals in three games. You feel like you're playing the best football of your life, so it's hard when you are not in your club team.

"I'm not happy just to get paid my money, not play and just come to train. I want to play football. I did everything in my life to become a professional footballer, and not just to sit on the bench and cheer my friends on.

"I don't think one goal is going to change my position. It's what you do throughout the season. I'd be a fool to stand here and say because I scored the winner against Bolton I deserve to play now.

"It's football. The gaffer has his choices. I've never questioned him as to why I'm not playing. Everyone thinks they're the best in the world but the gaffer is the one who takes the decisions, and it's a really difficult one because of the talent that we have here and the squad we have."
