Antonetti denies rejecting extension

Rennes coach Frederic Antonetti insists he has not turned down the offer a contract extension at the Ligue 1 side.

Reports last week suggested Antonetti had refused to extend his current deal by three years, but on Thursday the 39-year-old moved to clarify his position ahead of Saturday's home clash with Paris St Germain.

"Let me make some clarifications with respect to everything that was said after the match (the Coupe de France defeat to Reims)," Antonetti said. "I met Mr Pinault (the club's owner) last Wednesday. We talked about the future and he proposed to continue the adventure for the next three years.

"I was very flattered and honoured by this, because it is a great mark of confidence. I have never refused.

"There was a period of reflection to have. Point by point, we try to solve what should be. There is no deadline, there will be an international break in late March and by then I think a final decision will have been taken.

"Logic would dictate that we continue together. Moreover, the desire is to continue."

PSG can close within a point of Ligue 1 leaders Lille with a victory in Rennes, but the home side could join second-placed PSG on 37 points with a win of their own.

Lille are not in action until Sunday when they travel to Auxerre.

Elsewhere on Saturday, Marseille are at home to bottom side Arles, with boss Didier Deschamps playing down an injury scare surrounding striker Brandao ahead of the game with bottom side Arles on Saturday.

Brandao limped out of training on Thursday with an ankle problem but Deschamps said: "It's nothing too nasty. He just twisted his ankle."

The Brazilian has scored just one goal in 15 Ligue 1 appearances this season.

Brest will look for just a fourth home league win of the season against Nancy, while Caen take on Lorient and Lens will hope to climb out of the bottom three with a victory at home to Valenciennes.

A close game looks on the cards at the Stade de la Mosson, where sixth-placed Montpellier take on seventh-placed St Etienne, while Nice will look to climb away from the relegation zone at home to Sochaux.

Apart from Auxerre against Lille, Sunday's fixtures also see Toulouse at home to struggling Monaco and third-placed Lyon welcoming Bordeaux to the Stade de Gerland.
