South Africa axe Mphela and Modise

South Africa have axed World Cup stars Katlego Mphela and Teko Modise for next week's friendly against Kenya in Rustenburg.

Both players have been troubled in recent weeks, reportedly skipping training during the domestic Premier Soccer League (PSL) season.

Midfielder Modise was subsequently transferred from his club Orlando Pirates to Mamelodi Sundowns, where striker Mphela plays.

But the player who led Bafana Bafana's attack during last year's finals has also been absconding, with reports suggesting he has gone on strike in a bid to win a move abroad.

There are three uncapped players in the 24-man list - Reuben Cloete, Mzuvukile Tom and Thulani Serero and coach Pitso Mosimane said: "We had to take a good stand and send a strong message that discipline at clubs should be maintained and brought to Bafana Bafana, hence some of the familiar faces are not in this squad.

"We do not encourage behaviour where players miss training or matches for whatever reason, we cannot compromise the integrity of those clubs where those players are contracted by calling the very same players into the national team.''

Portsmouth defender Aaron Mokoena returns to captain the side after sitting out the last friendly against the United States, while new Tottenham recruits Bongani Khumalo and Steven Pienaar are also named, along with Leeds forward Davide Somma, who only recently chose to represent the country of his birth.

South Africa squad:

Goalkeepers: Itumeleng Khune (Kaizer Chiefs), Moeneeb Josephs (Orlando Pirates)

Defenders: Aaron Mokoena (Portsmouth), Bongani Khumalo (Tottenham), Siboniso Gaxa (Lierse), Anele Ngcongca (Racing Genk), Siyabonga Sangweni (Golden Arrows), Morgan Gould (SuperSport United), Mzuvukile Tom (Golden Arrows), Ruben Cloete (Orlando Pirates)

Midfielders Thanduyise Khuboni (Golden Arrows), Reneilwe Letsholonyane (Kaizer Chiefs), Siphiwe Tshabalala (Kaizer Chiefs), Steven Pienaar (Tottenham), Andile Jali (Orlando Pirates), Matthew Pattison (Mamelodi Sundowns), Kagisho Dikgacoi (Fulham), Daylon Claasen (Lierse), Tlou Segolela (Orlando Pirates), Sifiso Myeni (BidVest Wits)

Forwards: Bernard Parker (Panseraikos), Davide Somma (Leeds), Kermit Erasmus (Supersport United), Thulani Serero (Ajax Cape Town).
