Lafferty stunner defeats Hearts

Kyle Lafferty overshadowed new signings El Hadji Diouf and David Healy by slamming home a terrific volley to hand Rangers a 1-0 win against Hearts and move them within five points of league leaders Celtic.

After his surprise transfer on Monday, Diouf was named among the replacements, along with Healy, but Lafferty made sure he stole their limelight when he lashed home Steven Whittaker's cross in the third minute.

Diouf didn't have to wait long before making his Ibrox debut, replacing the injured Lee McCulloch. Walter Smith will have been impressed with what he saw as Diouf put himself about with purpose, shining on numerous occasions.

The former Blackburn striker set up Maurice Edu but his effort was deflected away from goal as Hearts defended for their lives. Rangers failed to capitalise on their great start but a fifth victory on the spin in all competitions will undoubtedly boost morale ahead of a mouth-watering Scottish Cup tie against Celtic.

Kilmarnock produced a brilliant rearguard display to snatch an unlikely 1-0 victory against an inspired Motherwell at Fir Park.

Completely against the run of play, Tim Clancy scampered down the right and delivered a pinpoint cross for David Di Silva to head home from close range in injury time.

In an open first half, Motherwell winger Chris Humphrey did well to find space for a low, angled strike but there was never enough pace on it to trouble Cammy Bell. The visitors had the ball in the net when Rui Miguel made the most of Alexei Eremenko's stunning through ball but the offside flag interrupted early celebrations.

One negative for Kilmarnock was the sight of defender Frazer Wright being carried off on a stretcher after clattering into Steven Saunders before the break.

Derek Riordan scored Hibernian's first goal of 2011 as they battled past fellow strugglers St Mirren 2-0 for their first win in 14 matches.

Hibs' last goal last goal came in the 2-2 draw with Dundee United on December 29 but Riordan ended the drought when he latched onto a head flick to score from 14 yards in the 63rd minute.

David Wotherspoon drilled home a fine strike at the death to give Hibs breathing space and their much-needed triumph, a first since November, lifts them five points clear of the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, the match between Inverness and Dundee United was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at the Caledonian Stadium.
