Toon reject £30m Reds bid for Carroll

Newcastle United have rejected a £30 million bid for striker Andy Carroll from an "unnamed Premier League club", widely reported to be Liverpool.

• Spurs fail with £25m Carroll offer
• Dalglish: Torres not for sale
• Live Transfer deadline day

Liverpool look set to lose star striker Fernando Torres, despite rejecting a transfer request from the 26-year-old on Friday, with Chelsea preparing a £50 million bid for the Spain international.

The Reds have already moved to sign Uruguay striker Luis Suarez from Ajax to bolster their attacking options and England international Carroll is the preferred replacement should Torres leave.

Dalglish told his pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday's home game against Stoke that there was no update on the Torres situation.

However, news of a move for Carroll suggests there is likely to be further movement later in the day, with Liverpool reportedly willing to accept £50 million for the striker.

Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish insisted on Monday that the club do not want to sell Torres but has admitted they are prepared for every eventuality and have considered a replacement.

Although Dalglish did not name a specific player, he said: "If someone's going to go, you've got to have a replacement."

Newcastle have spent much of the transfer window insisting Carroll, 22, is not for sale amid Tottenham Hotspur's concerted pursuit, and now it remains to be seen if their resolve to hang on to their 11-goal hitman can be broken during the remaining hours of the transfer window.

Spurs had a £25 million offer for Carroll turned down on Saturday, when a close associate of the striker told ESPNsoccernet: "You can take it from me that Andy will not be asking for a transfer. Whether or not Spurs have a bid, whether it is £25 million or not, Andy has not been told, and in any case, he is not agitating for a move."

Meanwhile, Newcastle have announced that their Monday press conference has been cancelled and would hopefully be rescheduled for Tuesday.
