Liverpool eye spending spree

Fernando Torres' potential £50 million move to Chelsea is set to spark a frenzy of deadline day transfer action as Liverpool prepare to reinvest the fee.

ESPNsoccernet reported on Sunday that Liverpool are willing to accept an offer for Torres if Chelsea let Nicolas Anelka come in the other direction as part of the deal.

Torres trained alone on Sunday but it appears he will not be the only player making a deadline day move if he does join the champions. Liverpool have the right to reject Chelsea's approach but knowing Torres is keen on a move, they are preparing a contingency plan of last-minute transfer deals to make the most of his large transfer fee and ensure they are not caught without enough firepower to replace their star striker.

The Reds have had a £4 million offer for Blackpool's talismanic midfielder Charlie Adam rejected this month but if Torres goes, they will have the funds to meet Ian Holloway's asking price, which is believed to be at least double that amount.

Aston Villa winger Ashley Young has also been widely linked with a move to Anfield and reports in the British press indicate he could be bought for around £18 million.

Chelsea are reluctant to let Anelka go and have reportedly offered youngster Daniel Sturridge instead, but Liverpool want a proven player to partner Luis Suarez, who is expected to complete a £22.8 million transfer from Ajax on Monday.

Reports on Monday suggested Liverpool could turn to Newcastle striker Andy Carroll to fill the Torres' void. The 22-year-old has scored 11 Premier League goals in his first 19 top flight matches. But Tottenham have also been linked with a late bid for Carroll after an incredible £38 million plunge for Sergio Aguero was rejected late on Sunday. Newcastle would be reluctant to let Carroll go in any case but the interest from two different clubs would drive his price up further, potentially over the £30 million mark.

Former Liverpool midfielder Luis Garcia, who played for the club from 2004 to 2007, leaving just a day before Torres joined, believes their failure to win trophies is one of the main reasons behind his compatriot's desire to leave Anfield.

"Torres left Atletico looking for trophies and titles and he has not achieved any of them and maybe it is time to think about it (a move)," Luis Garcia told BBC Five Live. "Liverpool are in a position where they are struggling in the league and maybe with all the changes they have done it is a good moment (to leave).

"I think Torres is a fantastic player and Chelsea are struggling a bit in the league and maybe that's what they need now. Someone different, someone who can give them more impetus. One player cannot change a team but it will help a lot.''
