Aston Villa midfielder Stephen Ireland is poised to join Newcastle United on loan for the remainder of the season.
Ireland, 24, has arrived in Newcastle to undergo a medical before joining up with Alan Pardew's side prior to the close of the transfer window on Monday night.
The midfielder joined Villa from Manchester City in the summer but has started only six Premier League games and has struggled to win over Gerard Houllier.
The Villa boss was critical of Ireland in November, saying the gifted player had to "work harder" if he was to secure a place in Houllier's side.
Ireland was valued at £8 million when joining Villa as James Milner made the opposite move.
