Kompany: Fight gives City an edge

Vincent Kompany has given an insight into how fierce Manchester City training sessions have become as they bid for glory on three fronts. Not that the Belgium international is complaining about what goes on behind the scenes at their Carrington complex.

In fact Kompany says it is an indication of how much the players want success with City aiming for a Champions League place as well as winning the Europa League. Then there is the FA Cup and a fourth-round tie against League One Notts County tomorrow.

Kompany said: "We have a very competitive squad. We may not yet be at the level of clubs who have won things for so many years but we are getting there. Our ambition is the same as theirs.

"If you look in training, a defeat in training can lead to a very dramatic scene where people are very angry at each other. I believe with this mentality we have now and the longer we are together we will be able to achieve great things. We will enjoy it as well as we enjoy being around each other.''

Kompany insists there will be no complacency at Meadow Lane. County, managed by former Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince, disposed of Sunderland in the third round - and in the top flight's side own backyard as well.

City for their part needed a replay before getting past Championship side Leicester. Those two games gave Kompany an indication of how tough matches can be against lower league opposition. County lie 59 league places below City and the Belgian wants his side to dictate the pace from the kick-off.

"We have seen what has happened in this competition so far. They have gone to Sunderland and won there,'' he told the club's official website. "We have to adapt. We have to make sure we are not influenced by their game. We want to play our game. If we don't we will be in trouble.''

Mancini could give a run-out to Shaun Wright-Phillips, who has been on the fringes this season. The midfielder looked to be heading out on loan but with the window about to close that now seems unlikely.

Mancini has told Wright-Phillips he can still play a part in the remainder of the season if he regains his form. Mancini said: "He is an important player but I understand he could be like Emmanuel Adebayor in that he has lost his confidence. He has not played many games. If Shaun stays here, it is important he finds his confidence.''

Defender Micah Richards could come into contention after a back problem while striker Edin Dzeko is set to make his debut in the competition.

However winger Adam Johnson misses out after suffering an ankle injury and will not be risked with a crucial league match to come against Birmingham on Wednesday at St Andrews.
