Hughes is desperate to keep Zoltan Gera at Craven Cottage with Blackpool and West Ham among a string of clubs pursuing the Hungarian forward.
Gera has indicated that he would be happy to leave Fulham during the transfer window due to his inability to nail down a place in the starting line-up.
The 31-year-old's contract expires at the end of the season but there is an option of a further year based on appearances and Hughes is eager to retain him.
''I've spoken to Zoltan and I don't want him to go. He's a great player. I like him as a player and I like him as a person,'' he said. ''He's indicated he feels he needs to move. I don't agree with him, I want him to stay.
''I've spoken to him about the option we have about games played and said we would take that forward and exercise that option now anyway because we want him to stay. We need more discussion.''
