Holloway calls on Adam to shine

Blackpool face Manchester United on Tuesday night in their rearranged Premier League fixture, live on ESPN in the UK, and manager Ian Holloway wants the in-demand Charlie Adam to show everyone what all the fuss is about.

• Houllier accuses Holloway

Adam had a transfer request rejected on Monday after Blackpool rebuffed a £4 million bid from Liverpool for the midfielder. Holloway considers that offer to be derisory, but with the player having just 18 months remaining on his contract the Tangerines will have to tread carefully.

Holloway wants Adam to go out and prove his class against United, and insists that he will continue to play his wantaway star man, signed for just £500,000 from Rangers - who will receive a 10% sell-on clause from any fee above that amount.

"If he shines Manchester United might want him,'' said Holloway. "Charlie is the best I have seen for a long time and he is only going to get better. That left foot is magical.

"I want to get Charlie where he should be; at one of the top four teams in the country. Next week he might be focusing on Champions League. He would do that with my blessing. But we need to be compensated properly.''

Holloway hopes that with Adam's head turned he continues to turn in the kind of performances which have led to interest from Liverpool, Birmingham City and Aston Villa.

"Will I ever have the same Charlie Adam? I don't know," Holloway added. "But this is his first season in this division. And before our game on Saturday we were 10th even though our total budget is less than Carlos Tevez earns in a year. Charlie has been a major part of that.

"If he loses his spirit it would be a crying shame. There is no chance of me leaving him out. If I tried to stop him playing against Manchester United, he would probably kill me. He loves this club. Just because he has put a transfer request in, that doesn't change. And it doesn't mean he is greedy either.''

Sir Alex Ferguson was full of praise for Holloway, who has confounded the critics in keeping Blackpool in mid-table in their debut Premier League season.

"Blackpool's form has been terrific so far,'' Sir Alex told Key103. "At this present moment in time, they would be my team of the year and Ian Holloway would be my manager of the year.

"They are having a golden spell. They are being very positive and scoring lots of goals. I know they have conceded them as well but it hasn't changed the way they have played. They have scored in every game so far and we know this will not be an easy game.''

United winger Ryan Giggs also praised the Bloomfield Road club.

"The manner Ian Holloway behaves transcends to the players,'' he said. "You can see that they are playing with freedom. They respect the teams they are playing against but they think they can beat them. That is a great thing to have. I am sure it will be the same when they are facing us.''
