Barthez open to Cosmos coaching role

Former Manchester United and France goalkeeper Fabien Barthez has admitted he would be interested in linking up with Old Trafford legend Eric Cantona at revived franchise New York Cosmos.

• Cantona back in football with Cosmos
• The rebirth of the New York Cosmos

The football world was stunned when the Cosmos announced last week that Cantona would be returning to football for the first time since retiring in 1997 to take up a position as their director of soccer.

The Cosmos franchise has reformed 25 years after the original club - made famous in the 1970s and 80s when the likes of Pele and Franz Beckenbauer turned out for them in the NASL - stopped competing.

And Barthez, who won the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship with France, appears keen to join his compatriot in the USA in a coaching capacity, though he questioned whether he would be able to make the move on a full-time basis.

"I'd love to give Eric a helping hand at New York Cosmos," Barthez told Telefoot. "I don't know exactly what kind of position I would occupy though. Maybe I can help out as a goalkeeper coach or so.

"There are plenty of things I could do. However, I'm not sure yet whether I'd be willing to move to America on a permanent basis."

Barthez brought his 17-year professional career to an end in 2007, though he has been working as a goalkeeping coach under Laurent Blanc for the France national team.
