Valdano rejects Mourinho rumours

Real Madrid general manager Jorge Valdano has dismissed talk of a major rift with coach Jose Mourinho.

• Valdano surprised by Benzema role
• Ramos linked with Real exit
• Ronaldo welcomes Llorente talk

As reported on Wednesday that Mourinho had grown frustrated with the club's inability to recruit a new striker in January and that he had been irked by Valdano's decision to query the use of Karim Benzema as a substitute.

It was speculated that Mourinho could return to Inter, or move to the Premier League with Manchester United or Manchester City at the end of the 2010-11 season.

However, Valdano told Marca: "You have interpreted my words as a message to the coach and I have done very bad things when it has been something that was never my intention and never intended.

"Mourinho has to drive us to achieve the greatest possible gains to be better than last year and hope to continue in this vein.

"Do not look for anything unusual. We have the logical relationship between a CEO and the first team."

On Madrid's attempts to bring Hamburg forward Ruud van Nistelrooy back to the club, Valdano added: "We're on it. This week is going to be definitely one way or another."

Captain Iker Casillas is confident that Mourinho will not walk away from the Bernabeu after only one season in charge of the nine-time European Cup winners.

"Jose Mourinho wants to stay and Real Madrid wants him to stay," Casillas told Onda Cero. "I can say this as I'm the captain.

"We have a young team and he knows in the long run this will pay off. He loves the city and he loves the club. We know that Madrid has to achieve more right now. But remember, we're a young and new-look team."
