Man City beat resilient Leicester

Manchester City booked a fourth-round tie against Notts County by beating Leicester City 4-2 at Eastlands in the FA Cup.

Returning to the ground that he had left in acrimonious circumstances two-and-a-half years earlier, Sven-Goran Eriksson was unable to mastermind a shock victory as City shrugged off a slow start to run out victors.

Carlos Tevez continued to render his transfer request a distant memory when he fired the hosts into the lead, thrashing a shot into the roof of net from 13 yards after a driving run at the heart of the defence. The goal came against the run of play, with Man City looking vulnerable against the Foxes' aerial bombardment as the visitors launched a succession of crosses.

It was no surprise when Paul Gallagher's spot-kick equaliser came - although Roberto Mancini's men had a reason to feel aggrieved, with Lloyd Dyer needing no encouragement to go to ground in the box under Patrick Vieira's tackle.

After a frenetic start, Man City began to grow into the game as the half wore on, grabbing control of the contest by showing more patience in possession - and they were rewarded with a two-goal salvo towards the end of the first half. First Vieira tapped in after Chris Weale could only divert David Silva's shot into his path, then Adam Johnson produced a composed finish after being sent clear by Silva's through ball.

The Premier League side didn't let up at the start of the second period, and they were handed an ideal opportunity to extend the lead when Tevez stepped up to take a penalty after being fouled by Jack Hobbs - but his low shot was easily kept out by Weale.

Leicester looked dead and buried as the match entered the final ten minutes as fatigue began to take hold, but a goal from nowhere ensured a dramatic finish. Lloyd Dyer, who looked offside, pounced on Yuki Abe's through ball before shrugging off Vincent Kompany's tackle to slot past Joe Hart. Alexander Kolarov's 25-yard drive crushed Leicester's resistance in the last minute.

Elsewhere, Wolves sailed through after recording a thumping 5-0 triumph over Doncaster at Molineux. Goals from Steven Fletcher, Geoffrey Mujangi Bia, Kevin Doyle, Matt Jarvis and David Jones handed Wolves a fourth-round clash at home to Stoke, who needed two extra-time goals from Jonathan Walters to win 2-0 at Cardiff.
