I don't try to be like Beckham - Bentley

David Bentley has flatly rejected claims that he attempts to be just like David Beckham, and he admitted he would not have picked himself had he been manager of Tottenham.

• Spurs coach questions Becks deal
• Bentley joins Birmingham

Bentley completed his loan move to Birmingham this week, having made only three appearances for Spurs this season. The England international is expected to go straight into the starting line-up for Birmingham's derby clash with Aston Villa on Sunday.

However, he arrives at St Andrew's carrying the tag of 'big-time Charlie', with comparisons made between Bentley and Beckham ever since Steve McLaren put the two in the same bracket on the eve of the former Blackburn man's England debut in 2007. Bentley insists both labels are unwarranted.

"I give you my word that I don't wake up in the morning with his poster on the wall and start worshipping it or look to see how he's done his hair today, so I can do mine the same," he said in The Guardian.

"There's probably a misconception of me. Sometimes people think I don't want to play but I love what I do. I love waking up in the morning, coming to work and sometimes it can get lost in translation that I toss things off. Sometimes you will see me bouncing behind cameras, throwing things over the manager. I just love enjoying myself, being around the lads.

"People sometimes get this perception that I'm a big-time Charlie. But that is not the case. I come from a working-class background, I have all the same people around me - my mum and dad. I haven't lost touch with where I've come from."

Bentley backs up those claims of realism by admitting Harry Redknapp was right not to pick him at White Hart Lane. However, he hopes Spurs can sort a deal for Beckham, for the good of the English Premier League.

"It will be great, won't it?" he said. "Like me, he's never had to rely on his pace, so it's his quality with the ball that will come through. It can only have a positive effect. It's great for the club. It gives it the worldwide appeal. Everyone will know about Tottenham, which will take them to a new level.

"The team were doing so well. It's very hard for a manager to put me in. How can you? I wouldn't have picked myself."
