West Ham keen to bring in O'Neill

West Ham manager Avram Grant is under growing pressure as speculation mounts that former Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has been sounded out for the job.

Third parties are rumoured to have approached O'Neill, currently out of work since leaving Villa Park before the start of the season, and there are mixed messages about whether he would take on the task of replacing Grant.

O'Neill is also one of the candidates to become the long-term replacement for Roy Hodgson at Liverpool, and if Kenny Dalglish suffers a third defeat in a row in the Merseyside derby at the weekend, the speculation about O'Neill being a possibility for the Anfield hotseat is sure to increase.

West Ham doubt that O'Neill is holding out for the Liverpool job, but it might be that a manager of his standing would insist on a hefty transfer budget to recruit players, with such stipulations making it tough for the club to meet when the Hammers are £80 million in debt.

However, if O'Neill gives any inclination that he would be happy to take on the role, West Ham will move swiftly to bring him in.
