Savage considers Vancouver move

Derby captain Robbie Savage could be set to join Major League Soccer side Vancouver Whitecaps after confirming that he was considering their proposal. Savage's contract with the Rams is due to expire at the end of the current campaign and the 36-year-old has said that he will definitely be leaving Pride Park. "I've got an opportunity to go to the MLS in March, with Vancouver," said Savage. "It's something I am giving serious consideration to. One thing is for sure, I will be leaving Derby County at the end of the season, if not before, even if they offer me a new contract. My time is up here. "I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with Derby and I want to walk away with my head held high. There have been highs and lows but I feel that it's made me into a man. It's also helped me to really understand football. It's been a great experience. "But now I think it's my duty to let the younger players come through. I wouldn't want to hinder their development." One of Derby's investors, Jeff Mallett, is a co-owner of the Whitecaps, who are preparing for their first season in the MLS under the captaincy of former Watford defender Jay DeMerit.

Even the trendy magazine GQ, in its '100 best things in the world' article this month, slotted 'Real Madrid's midfield' in at Number 28.

"I've met with the owners and I was very impressed with what they are offering, not in financial terms but in terms of the structure of the club," Savage added. "When I met them, I didn't think it would be as good as it was. "I'm now going out there at the end of this month to have a look and I could be a Vancouver player in March, April or May. Jeff Mallett, who owns a bit of Derby, is one of the owners of Vancouver and discussions are well under way. "I would like to see the season out with Derby but I think their (transfer) deadline is April 1, so I've some big decisions to make. I've got to think long and hard about it but, one thing is for sure, my time with Derby will be up on May 8 (the final game of the season)." Savage is keeping his options open and could move into coaching, but he is excited about the 'challenge' that a move to the USA could bring. "I think my work in the Championship is done, although I wouldn't mind being a player-manager somewhere, maybe," he revealed. "But I just think I need a change and the MLS could be a new challenge for me."
