Wenger ponders transfers
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger says he is still considering signing a defender during the January transfer window but will only bring someone in who can make an immediate impression.
Wenger is wary of signing a player who will take the rest of the season to adapt to the English game, effectively making his signing in January a pointless exercise. That suggests he may look to sign a player currently in the Premier League, but Montpellier defender Emir Spahic has issued his own 'come and get me' plea.
With Thomas Vermaelen having been out for months with no certainty about when he will return, it would be a gamble for Wenger to go into the crucial part of the season without adequate cover. But he will not sign a player just for the sake of it.
Wenger told Arsenal's official website: "We always have people in mind, and we look everywhere. It is difficult to find at this period of the season, but overall I feel at the moment we have so many games that it is very important to focus on the next game.
"If we find somebody at the right level we will do it, if not we will continue like this. We have still solutions internally with Miquel, with Song who can play centre-back and with Squillaci, who should come back very quickly.
"Ideally it would be better if they were adapted to English football because if you need players now in January you cannot wait three months before they can play for you. If the opportunity turns up we will fetch it, but if not we can cope. I believe we can cope.''
Spahic is eager to see Arsenal resurrect their interest in him after his French club priced him out of a move to the Premier League last summer.
"When I first heard about Arsenal's interest in the summer it was something really special to me," he told sport.co.uk. "When a club like Arsenal are interested it is something special for any footballer, and I was honoured. Unfortunately a deal could not work, and we could not conclude a deal.
"My management were in talks with Arsenal. I don't know what happened in the end, but I ended up staying in Montpellier. Then Mr Wenger bought another player, and that is football, it happens quite often.
"Currently I have not heard from Arsene Wenger. But my management are in talks with a couple of other Premier League clubs. I am actually waiting for some news.
"If Arsenal were interested again I could not say no. In the summer Montpellier were not interested in selling me because he (the manager) did not want to weaken the team. But I hope that something could happen in the next 7-10 days. Arsenal would be something really special for me personally."
