Evans proud of Crawley efforts

Crawley Town boss Steve Evans believes his side were worthy winners after Sergio Torres' injury-time strike earned a 2-1 win over Championship team Derby in their FA Cup third-round clash.

Miles Addison marked his first start after 12 months of injury by cancelling out Craig McAllister's first-half opener for the hosts with a 62nd-minute header but Derby, who missed a penalty through Kris Commons, saw their hopes of a replay snuffed out in stoppage time when Torres converted Dean Howell's corner to put the Conference side through to the fourth round.

"It's up there with the best of them," Evans said, with his side set to face a trip to Torquay in round four. "This club has had some great results but given the performance you have to say that we deserved it.

"We've got the squad to deal with a cup run. We've got a few players who some would say are better than what we had out tonight so one or two of them might freshen us up.

"When you've got a dressing room that's full of young guys that want to be in the Football League, it might sound like a dream, but we want to realise that dream.

"I didn't think it would be as emotional as that when you score late on. I think we deserved to win over the 90 minutes. I'm not surprised how well we matched them.

"Derby have got some terrific footballers who can play some terrific football and let's not forget it would have been hard for anyone coming here. I'm just proud of my players. They kept going until the last minute."

Evans and opposite number Nigel Clough have rarely seen eye to eye and the Derby boss, who was incensed when Matt Tubbs escaped with just a booking for a two-footed tackle on Robbie Savage, refused to speak to the press after the game.

"Nigel Clough is a man I have the upmost respect for," Evans said. "We had a bit of banter beforehand, but he's prepared properly.

"We'd like to think we've got a chance wherever we go, but if there's one manager who has done a great job in League Two it's [Torquay manager] Paul Buckle.

"We'll prepare properly and we'll do our homework and if that's where our FA Cup dream end that's where it ends but we'll certainly go there and be professional."

No-one from Derby was available to speak to the press.
