Adelaide hit Victory for four

Sergio van Dijk scored twice as Adelaide United produced one of their best performances of the season to defeat Melbourne Victory 4-1 at AAMI Park.

The win was the Reds' first in 10 games against Victory and ensures they are on course to seal a top-two finish in the A-League. Marcos Flores got the scoring under way in the 12th minute before Van Dijk grabbed his first of the day with a free-kick just before the hour.

Victory's hopes of a fightback were dealt a blow when skipper Kevin Muscat was sent off in the 65th minute and Adelaide took full advantage with further goals from substitute Fabian Barbiero and Van Dijk cementing the three points.

Mate Dugandzic pulled a goal back in the 90th minute but it was scant consolation for Victory, who remain in fifth place. Adelaide, meanwhile, are second with 43 points and trail leaders Brisbane Roar by nine points.

In the day's other game, Central Coast Mariners ensured they too remain in the hunt for a finish in the top two with a 1-0 win over Wellington Phoenix at Bluetongue Stadium.

Michael McGlinchey fired home from inside the box four minutes before half-time for the game's only goal.

The Mariners trail Adelaide by four points but have three games in hand.
