Madrid through despite defeat

Real Madrid progressed to the quarter-final of the Copa del Rey despite suffering a surprise 2-0 defeat to Levante on Thursday.

Copa del Rey Wednesday round-up

Madrid travelled to the game with an 8-0 advantage from the first leg at the Bernabeu but, having number of key stars in favour of the likes of Sergio Canales and Fernando Gago, they were unable to avoid defeat.

There was little goalmouth action at either end before Levante took the lead on the hour-mark through Xisco, who slotted in from the penalty spot after his cross had struck the hand of Fernando Gago inside the area.

Madrid almost drew level in the 82nd minute when Kaka, making his second appearance since recovering from his long-term injury absence, headed against the crossbar, but three minutes later Levante settled the match with a second goal.

Veteran midfielder Sergio was the goalscorer, firing a fine free-kick into the near top corner of the net to consign Jose Mourinho to his second loss following the 5-0 mauling against Barcelona at the Camp Nou.

Mourinho's men now face a derby date with Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals as their 1-1 draw at Espanyol was enough to progress 2-1 on aggregate.

Sergio Aguero, who recently committed to a two-year contract extension, fired Atleti ahead after 25 minutes and, although Fernandez Luis Garcia's 90th minute effort ensured the hosts were not beaten on the night, it was not enough to prevent their exit.

After a 0-0 draw in the first leg, Villarreal went two goals down at home to Valencia but battled back for a 4-2 victory.

Ever Banega and Roberto Soldado looked to have put the visitors in control, but Villarreal came back as goals from Santi Cazorla and Marco Ruben either side of a Guiseppe Rossi brace turned the match on its head.

Villarreal now take on holders Sevilla.

Real Betis battled to a 4-3 aggregate win over Getafe after winning 3-1 on the night to book a quarter-final tie against Barcelona.

Betis went three goals up in the second half with Jorge Molina opening the scoring before Ruben Castro netted twice in the final 18 minutes. Francisco Casquero netted a late Getafe goal but it proved no more than a consolation.

Almeria played out another 4-3 victory over Real Mallorca as they came away with an 8-6 aggregate victory.

Pablo Piatti and Jose Ortiz had netted two goals apiece to put Almeria 8-3 ahead on aggregate before a second-half Mallorca comeback - courtesy of two Fernando Cavenaghi goals and an effort from Michael Pereira - made for a slightly nervy last 15 minutes.

Almeria play Deportivo La Coruna in the next round.
