Holloway prepared to make changes

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway does not care who might criticise him for fielding an understrength side in the FA Cup this weekend.

Holloway courted controversy in November when he made ten changes for a Premier League game at Aston Villa.

He threatened to resign over the affair when it was suggested he could face punishment, arguing he should be able to select anyone from within his mandatory 25-man squad.

With a re-arranged game against Liverpool next Wednesday to prepare for, Holloway now wants to rest players again for Saturday's FA Cup third-round tie at League One Southampton.

Holloway said: "It's a fantastic competition, I'm not going to belittle it. We would love to win it. But we have got no chance with the squad we have got.

"Our priority all season has been to maintain our status (in the Premier League). With as many games as we have got this month, that is what our focus is.

"I'll be resting a lot of people and I'll be taking a lot of my second year youth team down.

"A lot of them will be sub and one of them might make his debut. I will play players who need to play and I will not worry about the score."

When asked if he was prepared for any criticism over selection, Holloway added: "I don't care about anyone else. What am I worried about anyone else for?

"I am doing my job, and I am trying to make Blackpool a Premier League team. We have got an FA Cup game every week - Man United at home or Tottenham away.

"That's a dream come true - an FA Cup game every week. That's what it feels like to us and we want a lot more of it."

The Liverpool game is one of three at Bloomfield Road postponed during the recent cold snap.

Manchester United will now visit on January 22 with Tottenham travelling to Fylde on February 22.

With a number of senior players missing at St Mary's, fringe players such as Keith Southern, Dekel Keinan, Rob Edwards, Brett Ormerod and Alex Baptiste are likely to get a chance.

Holloway's side have exceeded expectations in their first Premier League season and are currently 13th in the table.

Holloway, however, is aware of his squad's shortcomings and hopes to bring in some new signings in the coming month.

He said: "I've just come from a meeting with my chairman and he's got a list as long as my arm. He's annoying everyone by ringing them and hopefully he'll get some joy."
