Tottenham cool on Beckham bid

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp says the chances of David Beckham arriving at White Hart Lane are currently no better than "50-50" and has hinted he could withdraw his interest if progress is not made soon.

Tottenham are one of a number of Premier League clubs who have expressed an interest in taking Beckham on loan from LA Galaxy during the January transfer window, even though the player has previously said he would only represent Manchester United in the English top flight.

Redknapp claims to have received assurances from Beckham, 35, that he is keen to join Spurs, but LA Galaxy are resistant to the idea of allowing the midfielder to leave the club, and as yet no agreement has been reached.

With the MLS season starting on March 15, Beckham would play a maximum of 14 games at Tottenham, and Redknapp is growing increasingly sceptical about the feasibility of the transfer.

"If it is a very short-term thing it can be a problem," Redknapp said. "If we are only talking eight or nine games by the time we get him ready, it is a difficult one. I can't be leaving people out and then after a few games David goes back and I have to mess with the team again. But he would be great to have around. He'd be a great role model for the young players.

"It's gone quiet. It's in the hands of the chairman, but we can't go on too long because it could end up being a waste of time. We need to know what is happening soon.

"It's dragged on a bit and they might not let him go. It's 50-50. We need to know, really."

Former LA Galaxy manager Alexi Lalas is unsure whether the potential move would be in the best interests of the club, who have twice allowed Beckham to join AC Milan on loan. During his second spell in Italy, he suffered a serious Achilles injury that forced him to miss the World Cup and a large portion of the MLS season.

"American soccer fans say David Beckham has given a lot, but he's also taken a tremendous amount out of Major League Soccer," Lalas said.

"The reason David Beckham went over to Milan was to prepare, in theory for the World Cup. I think that was commendable and understandable to a certain extent - but now it is happening once again."

Meanwhile, Redknapp has hinted he is interested in signing Everton midfielder Steven Pienaar when the midfielder's contract expires at the end of the season.

"If he doesn't sign a contract he'll be a great free transfer for someone at the end of the year, if he doesn't stay at Everton," he said. "He still belongs to Everton, so it's a difficult one. They are still trying to keep him. We'll wait and see what happens."
