Aguero extends Atletico contract

Atletico Madrid striker Sergio Aguero has agreed a two-year contract extension to keep him at the Vicente Calderon until the summer of 2014.

Aguero had been widely tipped to leave Atletico last summer, with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City reportedly interested in acquiring the talented Argentina international.

But the 22-year-old pledged his future to the club ahead of the current season, and he has now put pen to paper on a new deal at Atletico.

Aguero, who has scored 13 goals in all competitions for the Rojiblancos this season, joined the club from Independiente in 2006 and helped Atletico to Europa League and UEFA Super Cup glory last season, forming a formidable partnership with Uruguay star Diego Forlan.

A statement on the club's website read: "Atletico Madrid confirm the renewal of striker Sergio Aguero's deal. The Argentinian commits until 2014.''

Aguero added on his personal wesbite: "I want to say I am very happy to have renewed with Atletico Madrid.

"It is not only about putting a signature on a contract, it is also renewing my commitment to the club I joined when I was 18 and where I have been for almost five years. It has also renewed my desire to keep progressing with the club.''

Atletico, who lie sixth in La Liga, started 2011 with a goalless draw at home to Racing Santander on Monday.
