Goals by Hirofumi Moriyasu and Bruno Cazarine lifted Sydney FC off the bottom of the A-League as they claimed a 2-1 win at Newcastle Jets.
The visitors had to absorb a lot of Jets pressure but they went ahead against the run of play in the 35th minute. Scott Jamieson sent in a corner which was met by Japanese player Moriyasu who volleyed the ball through a crowded penalty area and into the corner of the net.
Sydney then doubled their lead right on half-time when a poor backpass by Kasey Wehrman put Dimitri Petratos through on goal. Jets goalkeeper Ben Kennedy managed to kick the ball away but it only reached Cazarine who slotted the ball into an empty net.
Newcastle pulled a goal back through Labinot Haliti in the 65th minute but despite dominating the final 25 minutes they could not force an equaliser.
The victory sees Sydney move up to ninth, one place and four points behind the Jets as they kept alive their bid to make the A-League finals.
In the other match, Gold Coast United and Perth Glory shared a goalless draw, a result that keeps the former in fourth but drops the visitors to second bottom.
