Promising teenage winger Tommy Oar has been called up to Australia's squad for the Asian Cup after Hull's Richard Garcia was ruled out with a knee injury.
Players from around the globe are starting to converge in Dubai for the Socceroos' preparations but Garcia will remain in England, opening the door for one of Australia's most promising prospects and a surprising omission when Holger Osieck announced his 23-man squad a week ago.
Oar left Brisbane Roar to join Dutch club FC Utrecht six months ago but he has as yet failed to hold down a place in the first team, a factor which clearly counted against him in the initial selection.
But since Oar has around ten years of youth on his side compared to Garcia, those hoping Osieck would use the tournament to bring through a new generation of players will be pleased to see left-footed Oar learning from the likes of Harry Kewell and Brett Emerton in Qatar.
The Socceroos open their Asian Cup campaign against India on January 10 before meeting South Korea and Bahrain in the group stage.
