Chelsea bid to sign Luiz from PSG - source

Wigan end wait for Lopez deal

Wigan Athletic have finally completed the signing of Spanish defender Adrian Lopez after being given clearance by FIFA.

• On The Move: December 31

Lopez, 23, first joined Wigan on trial in August but his move to the DW Stadium had been held up by a contractual dispute with his former club Deportivo La Coruna.

The defender, who has represented Spain at Under-21 level, believed he was a free agent but Depor retained his registration. FIFA has now ruled that he can join Wigan on a free transfer until the end of the season.

Manager Roberto Martinez told the club's official website: "We've been waiting a while for the FIFA resolution, and it's great to see Adrian's desire to play for Wigan Athletic can finally be fulfilled.

"He is a player with a fantastic football education, coming through the ranks of Deportivo La Coruna and playing for Spain at Under-19 and Under-21 level, which gives him a unique development, and makes him a defender with real potential.

"He is a defender who is very calm under pressure, and is a great reader of the game, and I am confident he will be able to fulfil his potential at Wigan. He is desperate to help the squad to win games for Wigan Athletic."

Lopez, known as 'Piscu', made 23 Primera Division appearances for Depor and takes the No. 24 shirt at Wigan.

Martinez has also given his backing to struggling striker Mauro Boselli. The Argentinian has scored just one Carling Cup goal since his £6 million summer move from Estudiantes and has been linked with a move to Italy.

Martinez said: "He is still adapting to the British game and our team and that is going to take a little bit of time. There is going to be speculation because what he did in Argentina is going to make him a wanted man around Europe.

"All I want is Mauro to focus on Sunday. Mauro Boselli is a sensational goalscorer and we are going to try everything we can to allow him to be himself and enjoy his football at Wigan Athletic."
