Goal-hero Welbeck hails spirit

Danny Welbeck has targeted an extended goalscoring run after his header beat Bolton 1-0 and moved Sunderland into the top six of the Barclays Premier League.

•  Sunderland 1-0 Bolton

Welbeck netted in the first half and goalkeeper Craig Gordon then made a point-blank save to deny Zat Knight on the stroke of half-time.

Welbeck, on loan from Manchester United at the Stadium of Light, told Sky Sports: "That was my aim when I came here to get games. I'm just looking forward to carrying on my form.

"Every game in the Premier League is going to be tough but to get the three points and go ahead of Bolton (in the table) is great. Everyone's working well together and the team spirit is very high.''

Gordon admitted his stop from Knight had been a moment of rare action for him in the match. "It's probably the only real save I have had in the game but I managed to get a real solid hand to it,'' he said.

"It was a good save and it was important at the end that we got three points and that's what makes making saves like that even more important.''

Ivan Klasnic's late miss made sure Sunderland were not denied the win and Gordon admitted: "We got a bit of a life there but we will take the good luck when it comes. It's important for the team to keep clean sheets and keep grinding out 1-0 wins.''

Steve Bruce had expected a tough match and was unsurprised by the nature of the game. He said: "It was never going to be easy. It was a bitterly cold day and it was bobbling around a bit but the result was terrific.

"One thing I have learned is never to get too carried away. We have a good squad of players. I have said all along to get in the top 10 (is the target) and that remains the aim.

"Who knows, come spring we could mount a challenge and to get European football here would be great.''

Bruce paid tribute to the performance of scorer Welbeck. "Nobody ever denied Danny's ability. He is very popular and he is very popular in the dressing room.''

Bolton manager Owen Coyle thought his side were unlucky not to get a point. "I felt we had chances throughout the game. The way we came out (in the) second half we put Sunderland under pressure for the last 25 minutes.

"I'm not claiming we deserved to win but I don't think we deserved to lose the game.''

Coyle revealed he hoped to add to his squad during the January transfer window. He said: "I've got my eye on one or two but if it is a viable option we will address those in January.''
