Bayern play down title hopes

Bayern Munich are keeping a low profile despite breaking into the top five of the Bundesliga for the first time all season on Saturday thanks to their 4-1 triumph over Eintracht Frankfurt.

It was Bayern's biggest win of what has been a difficult season for the reigning champions. However, they still trail the league leaders Borussia Dortmund by 14 points and are not considering their chances of winning the Bundesliga again this season but rather taking one game at a time.

"I think that the best thing we can do right now is just concentrate on winning games and nothing else,'' chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said. "We have already made up a lot of ground and our aim is to keep clawing our way up.''

Bayern coach Louis van Gaal revealed that his side's minimum goal this season is third place "because the Champions League is very important for us'', and Saturday's performance gives him confidence that his side can at least finish inside the top three.

"I think this was the best Bundesliga game we have played since I have been in charge,'' he enthused. "I am very happy. We are heading in the right direction.''

Bayern head to Schalke next weekend to face a side who are unexpectedly in a crisis at the foot of the table.

The record German champions then end the calendar year with games against St Pauli and another crisis club Stuttgart.
