Mayor gives go-ahead to Spurs stadium

Tottenham Hotspur's plans to redevelop White Hart Lane have been approved by London Mayor Boris Johnson.

• Bale named on elite list

Johnson could have overturned a decision from Haringey Council to allow Spurs planning permission to construct a new 56,000-seater stadium.

However, he has chosen to give his backing to the project and Spurs are now free to progress unless the Government intervenes.

That scenario is unlikely, so Tottenham will now need to decide whether they will progress with their plans to redevelop the area.

Tottenham have also entered a bid to occupy the Olympic Stadium following the 2012 games, angering West Ham, who are considered favourites to take over the site.

After giving the redevelopment of White Hart Lane the go-ahead on Thursday, Johnson wrote to Haringey Council, saying: "I am content to allow Haringey Council to determine the case itself, subject to any action that the Secretary of State may take, and do not therefore wish to direct refusal or to take over the application for my own determination."
