Goais claim final spot

Brazilian side Goias claimed a surprise place in the Copa Sudamericana final by winning 2-1 at Palmeiras in the semi-final second leg.

Goias, who suffered relegation to the second division of the Brazilian league last weekend, won the tie against Palmeiras on away goals, having lost 1-0 at home in the first game.

Palmeiras went 2-0 ahead on aggregate in the 34th minute at the Estadio Pacaembu when Luan chested down a pass from Edinho and fired left-footed beyond goalkeeper Harlei.

However, Goias found an equaliser in stoppage-time at the end of the first half when Marcelo Costa hit the bar from a free-kick, Rafael Moura collected the rebound and crossed for Carlos Alberto to head in, via a deflection off Tinga.

Palmeiras were then stunned in the 82nd minute when Marcao crossed from the left and Rafael Moura headed the ball to the edge of the six-yard box where Ernando sneaked in to score the winner.

Goias forward Otacilio Neto said: "We are tremendously happy. We played a great second leg. It looked difficult after the first leg, but we finally celebrated with the score we needed. Relegation is disappointing, and is sad, but we are happy for this.''

In the final, Goias will either meet reigning Copa Sudamericana champions Liga Deportiva Universitaria or Argentinian giants Independiente.

Liga Deportiva Universitaria lead 3-2 from the first leg in Ecuador, and the tie concludes on Thursday.
