Pellegrini agrees to coach Malaga in La Liga coup

Former Villareal and Real Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini has joined La Liga strugglers Malaga after they sacked Jesualdo Ferreira earlier in the week.

Pellegrini somewhat inevitably made way for Jose Mourinho at the Bernabeu in the summer after just one season with Real, where he lost the league to Barcelona by three points despite a record haul of 96 points.

He had a terrific five-year spell at Villareal, steering them to the Champions League semi-finals in 2006 and finishing a club-record second in La Liga in one of a string of top-seven placings.

His signing is therefore something of a coup for Malaga, who currently languish in the bottom three having registered just two victories in nine matches.

Pellegrini has signed a three-year deal with the option to extend for a fourth season.

"Malaga Football Club and Manuel Luis Pellegrini have reached an agreement whereby the Chilean becomes the new coach of the jellyfish," said a club statement.
