Klinsmann accepts advisory role with Toronto FC

Former Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann has been appointed as a consultant with Major League Soccer club Toronto FC.

Klinsmann, also a former Bayern Munich boss, will help the MLS side with their restructuring in the wake of Mo Johnston's firing in September. Johnston, who first joined the club in 2006, had been working as director of soccer and his departure has prompted an internal overhaul which Klinsmann will help oversee.

"We're honoured to work with a football icon like Jurgen and to have access to his wealth of experience and expertise to evaluate our current operations and support our team's development,'' said Tom Anselmi, executive vice-president and chief operating officer of the club's owners, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment.

Klinsmann, who scored 47 goals in 108 appearances for Germany, will work with interim director of soccer Earl Cochrane and assistant general manager Jim Brennan.

"Jurgen's knowledge of the game and track record of international success, combined with Earl and Jim's experience will allow us to objectively look at everything from players to people to processes and conduct a comprehensive search for new leadership,'' Anselmi added.

Toronto finished sixth out of eight clubs in the MLS Eastern Conference.
