Ferrer handed Vitesse reins

Former Spain defender Albert Ferrer has been unveiled as the new coach of Eredivisie strugglers Vitesse Arnhem.

The club confirmed the appointment on their official website today, seven days after sacking Theo Bos following their disappointing start to the season.

The 40-year-old former Barcelona and Chelsea full-back takes over with the club third from bottom in the Dutch top flight, having picked up only eight points from their first 11 games.

The club's new owner, Georgian Merab Jordania, has selected Ferrer as the man to turn around Vitesse's fortunes despite the fact he has no first-team coaching experience.

He will be assisted by Stanley Menzo, Albert Capellas Herms and Hans van Arum, with former Manchester United stopper Raimond van der Gouw continuing as goalkeeping coach at the GelreDome.

Ferrer, who won 36 caps for Spain, came through the youth ranks at Barca and enjoyed five Primera Division successes with the Catalan giants. He also picked up two Copa del Rey titles, the 1992 European Cup and the 1997 European Cup Winners' Cup before leaving for Chelsea in summer 1998.

He helped the Blues to FA Cup glory in 2000 before retiring from football three years later, and has since worked as a pundit.
