Frings open to MLS switch

Werder Bremen captain Torsten Frings will set his sights on a move to Major League Soccer if he fails to land a new contract with his current employers at the end of this season.

Frings, 33, has played for Bremen for over ten years across two stints but has yet to agree terms on a new deal with the club's hierarchy.

Frings has spent his whole career in Germany - having also had spells at Alemannia Aachen, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich - but insists he will look farther afield if released come the summer.

And New York - home of the Red Bulls MLS franchise, which already boasts the talents of Thierry Henry, Rafael Marquez and Juan Pablo Angel - appears to be his preferred destination.

"I will definitely have one or two [more] years playing football," Frings said in an interview with Die Welt newspaper. "Werder Bremen is for sure my first choice [but] if I leave, it will not be for another German club.

"The United States, it excites me. I am fan of America, and New York is my dream city."
