Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier has revealed that captain Stiliyan Petrov will miss two months of the season with a knee injury.
Petrov was forced to come off five minutes before half-time against Sunderland after he sustained the problem in the first half of Saturday's 1-0 defeat. The 31-year-old will now undergo a scan to see if he needs surgery on the problem, which will almost certainly keep him on the sidelines for at least eight weeks.
"We have lost Stiliyan Petrov for maybe two months," Houllier told Sky Sports News. "We will know whether he needs an operation by the middle of the week. It's a shame because he was getting back to a good level."
