Cruzeiro usurp Fluminense with narrow win

Cruzeiro knocked Fluminense off the top of the Brazilian Campeonato with a 1-0 win over their rivals.

Wellington Paulista scored the only goal of the game in the 14th minute as Cruzeiro went two points clear at the summit.

Third-placed Corinthians missed the chance to close the gap on the leading pair as they went down 4-3 at home to Atletico Goianiense.

Leandro Castan, who was later sent off early in the second half, put Corinthians in front in the first minute, but the game then turned on its head as goals from Juninho, Gilson and Marcos Santana had the visitors 3-1 up at half-time.

With Corinthians down to 10 men, Santana added another in the 66th minute before the hosts staged something of a fightback with goals from William and Thiago Heleno.

Avai came from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw at home to Flamengo, who ended the game with nine men. A quickfire brace from Val Baiano put Flamengo two up after 16 minutes, but Emerson pulled one back in the 53rd minute.

The visitors had Leonardo Moura dismissed in the 57th minute and Erinaldo brought Avai level two minutes later. Both sides had players sent off in the 90th minute, David seeing red for Flamengo and Rudinei for Avai.

Alecsandro scored on the stroke of half-time and was later sent off as Internacional claimed a 1-0 win over Atletico Mineiro.

Botafogo drew 0-0 at home to Palmeiras, who had Kleber sent off in the 90th minute.

Bernardo's 76th-minute goal earned second-bottom Goias a 1-0 victory at home to Vitoria.

Ceara recorded a 2-0 win over Guarani thanks to first-half goals from Geraldo and Boiadeiro.
