Johnson saves point for City, Reds held

Manchester City winger Adam Johnson cancelled out Vincenzo Iaquinta's early strike to earn his side a 1-1 draw against Juventus in their Europa League clash at Eastlands.

Hodgson satisfied after Reds draw

Alessandro Del Piero thought he had won the game for the visitors seven minutes from time when his free kick hit the underside of the bar. He complained to referee Eduardo Gonzalez the ball had gone over the line but replays proved otherwise.

Liverpool escaped with a goalless draw in their Europa League clash in Utrecht after another disjointed and disappointing performance.

A point in the Stadion Galgenwaard, where the hosts had won their previous six matches, was no disgrace but it was hardly one of those classic, gritty away performances in Europe.

Roy Hodgson's side, who had five successive Europa League victories prior to this game, were dominated for long periods and their clean sheet owed much to goalkeeper Jose Reina and a goalline clearance from Raul Meireles.

Sevilla earned their first victory in Europa League Group J with a hard-fought 1-0 win at ten-man Borussia Dortmund.

Sevilla went ahead through Luca Cigarini with a goal two minutes into first half stoppage-time, before the hosts were reduced to 10 men in the 50th minute when Marcel Schmelzer was given his second yellow card.

Edinson Cavani struck in the eighth minute of injury-time to earn Napoli a point against ten-man Steaua Bucharest in a 3-3 thriller in Romania.

Trailing 3-0 after 16 minutes played, the Italians fought back after Pantelis Kapetanos had been sent off. Luigi Vitale scoed on the stroke of half-time, Napoli substitute Marek Hamsik made it 3-2 with 17 minutes remaining before Cribari stunned the hosts with seconds to go.

Atletico Madrid suffered another setback in the defence of their Europa League title after being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Bayer Leverkusen.

The Spanish side, who ended a 14-year wait for some silverware when they won this competition last season, suffered a 1-0 defeat in their opening Group B match against Aris Thessaloniki and they dropped another two points at the Vicente Calderon against Leverkusen.

Villarreal got their Europa League Group D campaign up and running with a deserved 2-1 victory over ten-man Club Brugge at El Madrigal.

The Yellow Submarine, who are enjoying a good start to the domestic Spanish season, lost to Dinamo Zagreb in their opening group outing but bounced back in this one thanks to goals in either half from Giuseppe Rossi and Gonzalo Rodriguez.

Sampdoria ended their month-long wait for a victory with a nervy 1-0 win over Debrecen. Italy striker Giampaolo Pazzini scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in the 18th minute, while he, Daniele Mannini and Antonio Cassano all wasted chances to kill the tie.

Falcao earned Porto a second successive Europa League victory with a 1-0 win at CSKA Sofia. The Colombian was set up by strike partner Hulk to give the visitors an early lead they never relinquished.

Zenit St Petersburg heaped more misery on troubled AEK Athens after a 4-2 victory. Early goals from Tomas Hubocan and Danny Alves put the hosts in control and a reply from Nikos Liberopoulos proved only a brief tonic as Danko Lazovic converted a penalty before half-time.

That came after Cristian Nasuti had seen red for a foul, and Lazovic grabbed his side's fourth in the second half before Pantelis Kafes reduced the deficit with a late penalty.

Palermo were made to wait to seal a narrow 1-0 victory over Swiss Challenge League minnows Lausanne, while BATE Borisov moved to the top of Europa League Group E with a handsome 4-1 victory over struggling Dutch side AZ Alkmaar.

Stuttgart's strong start to the Europa League continued with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Danish outfit Odense BK, thanks to goals from Zdravko Kuzmanovic and Martin Harnik. The hosts briefly drew level through Andreas Johansson.

Besiktas came from behind to record a 2-1 victory over Rapid Vienna. Veli Kavlak gave Rapid the lead but Filip Holosko - a first-half substitute for the injured Ricardo Quaresma - equalised and Bobo grabbed the winner.

Paris St Germain secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over Ukrainian side Karpaty Lviv. Christophe Jallet's strike in the fourth minute gave the French Cup winners the perfect start and Brazilian striker Nene extended PSG's control of the match after 20 minutes.

A David Degen brace earned Young Boys a 2-0 home victory over Getafe, while three goals in the final 18 minutes saw CSKA Moscow maintain their 100% start with a 3-0 win over Sparta Prague.

Ante Vukusic was the hero as Hadjuk Split grabbed a 95th-minute winner against Anderlecht. Meanwhile, a dramatic four-minute spell saw PSV Eindhoven beat ten-man Metalist Kharkiv 2-0.

Helder Postiga inspired Sporting Lisbon to an easy 5-0 win over Levski Sofia as the Portuguese side seized control of Europa League Group C.

Rosenborg got their Europa League campaign back on track with a slender 2-1 victory over Aris Salonika in Norway, while Dynamo Kiev suffered an embarrassing 2-0 defeat at the hands of Moldovan champions FC Sheriff to leave one of the famous names of European football bottom of Europa League Group E.

Lech Poznan earned their first victory in Europa League Group A with two unanswered goals against visiting Salzburg, while PAOK Salonika also gained their first win as they beat Dinamo Zagreb 1-0.

Gent and Lille were both left still looking for their opening Europa League Group C victory as they played out a 1-1 draw in Belgium.
