Sevilla sack coach Alvarez, turn to Manzano
Sevilla have sacked their coach Antonio Alvarez after their 2-0 loss at Hercules on Sunday, replacing him with Gregorio Manzano in a bid to get their season back on track.
Alvarez led the side to a Copa del Rey triumph and Champions League qualification last season but after losing to Braga in the Champions League play-off and capping off an underwhelming start to their domestic campaign with defeat at the newly promoted giant-killers, Sevilla decided to dismiss Alvarez.
Sevilla are yet to win at home in four matches in all competitions, including a disappointing 1-0 Europa League loss to Paris St Germain. The failure to fire at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan is believed to have weighed heavily in the club's decision to get rid of Alvarez.
Former Mallorca coach Manzano will take charge for the club's daunting visit to in-form Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League before they meet Atletico Madrid in Seville on October 3.
Manzano steered Mallorca to an impressive fifth place last season but the club were unable to agree to terms for a new contract, meaning it was only a matter of time before another club pounced as Sevilla have done.
