Bayern look to prevent Mainz record

Bayern Munich host Mainz this weekend with the record for the best start to a Bundesliga season in history under threat, although it is not the Bavarian giants who are chasing it.

Mainz have won their first five matches this season and they head to the Allianz Arena needing just two more wins to go down in the history books along with their hosts Bayern, who started with seven wins in 1995, and Kaiserslautern, who repeated the feat in 2001.

"It's absolutely incredible," Mainz coach Thomas Tuchel said after his side's 2-0 win over Cologne in midweek took them to 15 points for the season. "The way we played in the first half is the best football I have seen since I was coach here.

"I was really excited by it. With that kind of performance, we could play in the Premier League. The fans were fantastic and then we were rewarded with two late goals."

Mainz have developed a habit for surprises, as Bayern will remember from last season when they were beaten at the Bruchwegstadion, so that starting record really could be under threat.

Should Mainz beat Bayern, they would have to win against Hoffenheim and Hamburg to set a new record of eight straight wins.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga this weekend, struggling Werder Bremen host Hamburg on Saturday evening and Stuttgart, who have also made a poor start to the season, are at home to Bayer Leverkusen.

Schalke won for the first time in midweek and they will be aiming to follow that up with victory against Borussia Monchengladbach at the Arena AufSchalke.

Wolfsburg have finally started winning with two victories in a week and they host Freiburg on Sunday with Kaiserslautern's match against Hannover rounding off the weekend's fixtures.

On Friday night, Cologne are in action against Hoffenheim with Eintracht Frankfurt's clash with Nurnberg and St Pauli's home game against Borussia Dortmund completing the sixth round of Bundesliga matches on Saturday.
