Sunderland injury crisis won't prevent McCartney exit

Sunderland will allow George McCartney to join Leeds United on loan despite their mounting problems in defence.

• Bramble denies allegations

McCartney has fallen out of favour under Steve Bruce and is expected to join the Championship club on a one-month loan deal in order to enjoy some first-team football.

Bruce will push the deal through despite losing Anton Ferdinand, John Mensah and Michael Turner to injury and seeing first-choice left-back Kieran Richardson suffer a hamstring concern.

"We're a little bit short in defence, but I still think George needs to go out and play some games," Bruce told The Journal. "I think that is in his best interests and ours so we'll let him go to Leeds.

"Anton Ferdinand has picked up a hamstring injury, Michael Turner and John Mensah are definitely out and we are just waiting to see how Kieran Richardson is.

"He would probably have come off in normal circumstances [in the Carling Cup defeat to West Ham], but we'd used all our subs the other night and he stayed on. Hopefully he'll be okay."

Titus Bramble was arrested on suspicion of rape on Wednesday but it is expected that he will be asked to play against Liverpool on Saturday with Bruce short of options.
