Rosicky: Arsenal out to win Carling Cup this year

Tomas Rosicky says Arsenal are determined to take the Carling Cup seriously this season as they seek to end a trophy drought that has "gone on too long."

• Giants fall in Carling Cup

Arsene Wenger has never disguised the fact that England's second cup competition is at the bottom of his list of priorities, but he surprisingly reversed his policy of playing his youngsters in Tuesday's 4-1 victory over rivals Tottenham at White Hart Lane.

While the opening goalscorer, Henri Lansbury, has little experience in the Arsenal first team, Wenger fielded senior players such as Samir Nasri and Rosicky, and later brought on Marouane Chamakh and Andrei Arshavin to ensure victory.

Wenger's team was the strongest he has fielded in the competition for around a decade, and Rosicky believes that having not won a trophy since the 2005 FA Cup, Arsenal are now treating the Carling Cup as a possible route to success, rather than a breeding ground for young talent.

Arsenal's chances of winning the trophy this season were certainly improved on Wednesday night when Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea were all eliminated from the competition.

"It is important to end the trophy drought because it's gone on too long," Rosicky said. "You can see the boss is going for it. He wants to win the Carling Cup more this season because he took the whole team here.

"That gives us a better chance of winning it, we have a good enough squad to compete on all levels. I came in 2006 and have won nothing yet. I came here to win trophies, so let's go for it in style.

"I was happy I was playing because a game against Tottenham is a great one to play in. Maybe I was a bit surprised that the whole team came here, even though he rotated a little bit, but all the players who played in the starting XI showed that they want to play."

The star of the show against Tottenham was 18-year-old Jack Wilshere, who continued his impressive progression this season with a performance of real tenacity and maturity.

Rosicky was certainly impressed by the midfielder, who became the tenth youngest player to represent England when featuring in a friendly against Hungary in August.

"The thing that impresses me most about him is that when he has got the ball he is very calm," Rosicky said, "and that's something the young guys don't always have. Sometimes younger players panic a bit when they have possession but with him you don't see it because he's very comfortable on the ball. He is a great talent. For his age he has a great brain and he has a great future."
