Brooking: Next England boss might not be English

There is no guarantee that the next England manager will be English, according to the Football Association's director of football development, Sir Trevor Brooking.

With Harry Redknapp, Sam Allardyce and Roy Hodgson all being touted as possible candidates to succeed Fabio Capello (who will relinquish his role as England manager in 2012), Brooking admitted that while they are keen to appoint an Englishman, it was not a certainty.

"The general view is, let's see what happens in the next 18 or 21 months. But, come the summer of 2012, we would like to go English,'' Brooking told the Evening Standard. ''We've got to see what English people are available.

"There's one or two who have got good club roles. So you could get to the situation where you identify a person, but he's locked into two years on a four-year deal with massive compensation. He can't unlock himself. Suddenly your three best English candidates might not be available."

With Redknapp having guided Spurs into the Champions League for the first time this season and Hodgson having taken over at Liverpool after taking Fulham to the inaugural Europa League final, Brooking confirmed that their achievements in the Premier League make them possibilities for the job.

"Until they got the Spurs and Liverpool jobs, it was very difficult to get an English coach in the top half a dozen clubs. Roy and Harry are getting great experience but you're not going to squeeze me down to those two. There are other managers and it's not going to be my decision alone."

Brooking also revealed that following England's failure at the World Cup, the FA quickly came to the conclusion that Capello was still the man to take England forward.

"Soon after we came back, we had a meeting with the Club England members, who are Dave Richards, the Premier League chairman, Adrian Bevington and myself. We believed Fabio was still the proper person to take England forward."
