Redknapp: Fans want to see trophies and not kids

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has criticised Arsene Wenger ahead of Tuesday night's Carling Cup tie at White Hart Lane by saying Arsenal fans would rather actually win something than see the youth team play every season.

Spurs squad get Carling chance.

• Redknapp: Sandro like Socrates
• Van der Vaart: Spurs the bigger club
• Forum: Biggest club in North London?

Arsenal have not won a trophy since lifting the FA Cup five years ago, and Redknapp has suggested that Gunners boss Wenger should have taken the Carling Cup more seriously.

Wenger always bloods young players in the competition, a trend which will continue against Spurs when the likes of Havard Nordtveit, Chukwuemeka Aneke, Craig Eastmond, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas and Benik Afobe could make an appearance.

However, Wenger has still enjoyed qualified success with his young stars, losing to Chelsea in the final in 2007 and also to Wigan Athletic and Tottenham in the semi-finals.

Redknapp, who lost in the Carling Cup final to Manchester United on penalties with Spurs in 2009, told the Daily Star: "I think that you need to win. Winning is great and the fans want to see some trophies.

"I wouldn't want to be sitting in a position where the fans go: 'It was good, he played all the kids and didn't win nothing but he has a good youth team'. That doesn't work - not for me."

Redknapp is likely to make many changes from the side which beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 at the weekend, though suggested he would stop short from bringing in his youth team.

Redknapp did though admit that he is unlikely to put emphasis on the Carling Cup this season with the club in the Champions League.
