Carragher and Gerrard back Reds to improve fortunes

Liverpool stalwarts Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard are confident a couple of victories will put a different perspective on the current situation at Anfield.

• Fergie slams Torres over O'Shea clash
• Hodgson denies 'catastrophe' talk
• Blackstone rule out backing Hicks bid

The pair have seen more than their fair share of ups and downs during their time at the club and insist things are not as bad as they are being portrayed.

Even in defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford there was not a huge gulf between the two sides and Liverpool's current 16th place in the Premier League is undeniably a false one.

At this stage last season the club had also suffered two defeats - against Tottenham and Aston Villa - and beaten Stoke, Burnley and Bolton.

The start this time around has been much tougher, with two reverses in Manchester already, draws at home to Arsenal and away at Birmingham and victory over West Brom.

But so fine are the margins that had Jose Reina's error not handed the Gunners a last-minute equaliser in the opening game of the season Liverpool would currently be only a point off fourth place.

Their next league matches are home against Sunderland and Blackpool and Carragher reckons two victories would make a huge difference.

"There is still a long way to go," Carragher said. "Though we have not started great in terms of results, there are a lot of things to take into account. "This is a transitional time but we have just got to remain positive. A few wins and everything will look different.

"We have got two home games coming up in the Premier League and we need to make them count. We've had a great start in the Europa League (winning all four qualifiers and their opening group match) and we just have to make sure we keep on believing.''

Gerrard is also targeting back-to-back league wins, although he admits the side have some work to do to in defence having clawed their way back from 2-0 down against United only to concede for a third time six minutes from the end.

"What's done is done and all we need to talk about now in the next few days is the games we have got coming up,'' Gerrard told the Liverpool Echo.

"We've got a League Cup game against Northampton (on Wednesday) and that competition is very important to us before we play Sunderland next.

"Nobody will be sulking because we want to make sure that we go into the next international break next month having won all our games. It is a question of learning from mistakes.

"It's not important who holds their hands up. We have got to defend better as United and (Manchester) City have both scored three against us.''
